Things to Know Before Travelling to Bahrain for Work
Maintaining Proper Etiquette:
The working week in Bahrain runs from Sunday to Thursday. Friday and Saturday are weekends. Be extremely respectful of the culture and the political establishment. Do not photograph government and military buildings, religious sites, construction sites and strangers. Avoid displaying affection and consuming large amounts of alcohol publicly. Men and women must dress modestly and cover their shoulders, knees and back.
Documents Needed To Travel To Bahrain:
While the employer submits the application for the employees’ visa, employees must provide a medical report and show academic or professional qualifications for the position. After employees get their work permit, they’re automatically entitled to live and work in Bahrain. The residence permit for the employees has to be obtained within a period of thirty days from the date of arrival. Upon arrival, workers must make arrangements for their CPR card, and carry it with them at all times.
Travelling To Bahrain:
Bahrain has strict laws against bringing offensive media, narcotics and drugs, medicines and inappropriate media that contradicts Islamic faith and Bahraini culture. Weapons are also prohibited. You must declare large quantities of cigarettes, currency, and jewelry. Check with the authorities at the Bahraini Embassy if you need any clarifications on items you can and cannot carry.
Health Insurance:
Currently, it is not mandatory for employers to provide health insurance to employees. However, companies that hire more than 50 workers may be required to provide one. A new proposed law will soon be implemented, that makes it mandatory for employers to provide public healthcare insurance for employees to access both public and private health care. The new law stipulates that domestic workers will be covered for free by the government.
Phone Plans:
The three main service providers in Bahrain are Batelco, Zain, and Viva. All three offer postpaid contracts as well as prepaid SIM cards. You must register using your passport or a recognized valid ID.
Bank Accounts:
Employees will need a copy of their passport, copy of their visa, a relevant work permit, proof of residential address, and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the existing employer to open a bank account in Bahrain.
